The ability to use a branch of applied statistics that seeks to extract information from a set of data in order to gain insight about the underlying process generating the data.

Business Analytics

Level 1

Understands the basics of data and how it relates to a business function. Can understand basic graphs and charts, and is able to identify trends.

  • Sales & marketing: You have a cursory understanding of data manipulation and analyses.

  • Product development: You understand the fundamentals of day to day work in product development, and how analytics can support it.

  • Business forecasting: You are confident in the accuracy of forecasts and understand the industry, market or product very well.

Level 2

Has a deep understanding of data analytics. Can identify deviations from the norm, and is able to identify relationships between various data points.

  • Sales & marketing: You can build dashboards with a variety of data points - these dashboards can be used for directional insights for marketing, sales, and customer service.

  • Product development: You are able to manage day-to-day analytics for product development.

  • Business forecasting: You can identify and interpret key business drivers and trends.

Level 3

Is able to identify complex relationships within a dataset for specific business functions. Can provide insights into the dataset that have not been previously identified.

  • Sales & marketing: You can manipulate data, analyse data, and create compelling reports based on the customer needs. Has a deep understanding of databases and analytics tools. Can create predictive models.

  • Product development: You lead the team on product led analytics, ensuring transparent, fair processes and are able to mentor the most junior members of the team.

  • Business forecasting: You build models to address complex business questions. You are able to understand trade-offs between model parameters and business context, and can articulate these trade-offs to others.

Level 4

Is an expert in their field. Is able to lead a team in analysing large datasets, as well as communicate those analyses coherently to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Sales & marketing: You leads junior analysts in analyzing customer needs to create predictive models and dashboards to help the company achieve its goals.

  • Product development: You are able to build models that help analytics lead on areas of product. You ensure the team has a seamless integration with product team.

  • Business forecasting: You lead the team on solving new problems in innovative ways, devising new models to solve complex problems. You can build models quickly for complex business questions.

Level 5

Is able to lead global teams in analysing large, complex datasets for insight into customer behaviour, direction of future strategies and predictive analytics.

  • Sales & marketing: You lead the entire analytics function for the company from strategy to execution. You are able to turn complex concerns into easy-to-understand solutions for different departments within the company.

  • Product development: You lead the entire organisation on analytics for product development. You are an expert on product development and innovation practices, process design and implementation.

  • Business forecasting: You are an organisational expert in solving complex problems using new models. You drive innovation in modelling approaches for difficult business problems, and have a clear vision of the organisation's strategy for modelling and provides leadership on new modelling initiatives.
