Level 1

Is able to use data visualisation to communicate complex data to a non-technical audience.

  • Visualisation tools: You understand the fundamentals of how to use data visualisation tools.

  • Storytelling: You understand the importance of storytelling in the field of data visualisation.

  • Presentation & documentation: You can interpret data to create basic charts and graphs, and present them to your manager.

Level 2

Is able to produce novel and compelling visualisations, while understanding the limitations of different methods.

  • Visualisation tools: You have a good understanding of the relevant visualisation tools available to you, and are able to consistently produce high-quality visualisations.

  • Storytelling: You can use storytelling to create data visualisations that illuminate a previously impenetrable dataset.

  • Presentation & documentation: You are able to document your work, create relevant, clear charts and can present them to the wider team.

Level 3

Is able to create elegant and informative visualisations that convey complex data in a transparent and accessible way. Always has a design aesthetic that is on trend and matches the needs of the audience.

  • Visualisation tools: You are an expert at using the visualisation tools provided by the organisation. You can be relied upon to produce excellent visualisations for key presentations and discussions.

  • Storytelling: You consistently take narratives from the data to link to active business problems, taking other people along with you using storytelling techniques.

  • Presentation & documentation: You present data in an engaging way to convey the message to your team, and wider teams. You thoroughly document your work to ensure easy handovers to someone with little knowledge of the work done to date.

Level 4

Is able to produce visualisations that are so persuasive they are considered an integral part of the business process.

  • Visualisation tools: You have a deep understanding of how to use data visualisation tools, and is able to advise others on best practices. You keep abreast of new tools entering into the market and are able to advise on when the organisation needs to make a change.

  • Storytelling: You create data visualisations suitable for the entire company. You guide the company in utilising the best practices of storytelling.

  • Presentation & documentation: You regularly present work to the entire organisation. You lead the team in your documentation of work, taking on the perspective of a future user.

Level 5

Is the organisational leader in producing unique, innovative visualisations that are easily consumed by non-technical audiences.

  • Visualisation tools: You have a deep understanding of how to use data visualisation tools, and are able to advise others on best practices. You mentors junior members of the team on best practice.

  • Storytelling: You are an expert in storytelling, leading the company in data visualisation and storytelling best practices.

  • Presentation & documentation: You produce high-quality visuals efficiently and effectively. You can be relied upon to produce excellent visuals for key presentations and discussions.
