Process

The ability to understand, use and improve working process for yourself and others

Process

Level 1

Has a sense of their own process. Plans ahead, looks for best practice, reads around industry standards and resources.

  • Knowledge of best practice: You read some well known processes and have used all or parts of them in your work.

  • Reflecting on your own process: You can point to a documented personal process, drawn from best practices. You're conscious of what works and doesn't and can describe the best process for you personally.

Level 2

Iterates on and develops their own process, as well as being conscious of how to manage their day and week. Confident talking about recognised processes.

  • Knowledge of best practice: You understand best practices around process and consistently build techniques and theory into your work, with demonstrable effects.

  • Reflecting on your own process: You implement a personal design process across several projects, with demonstrable, documented results across quality and time management.

Level 3

Is confident running a team-wide process, and defending that process against sceptics and difficult stakeholders. Is not dogmatic about 'by the book' process, recognises that tools are just tools.

  • Knowledge of best practice: You regularly champion and facilitate the use of best practice amongst your peers and wider team, recognising when to and when not to use a certain process at a certain time. You can describe where certain processes either don't apply or won't work.

  • Reflecting on your own process: You demonstrate the effectiveness of your personal process to the point where others are adopting it too. This consistent process across the organisation starts to lead to more efficient critique and better shared understanding across the team.

Level 4

Starting to define and document the process of working for their team and organisation. Champions and improves that process over time. Encourages others to improve and grow their own ways of working.

  • Knowledge of best practice: You use existing and documented processes, to evaluate and bring learnings into your own team's process. You demonstrate being able to adapt the tools you have to any situation or project, optimising for good outcomes over good case studies.

  • Reflecting on your own process: You can describe what an ideal process looks like for yourself, someone on your team or in your organisation, how that dovetails with others on the team and why it works. You demonstrate and champion the phases of a good process and help others to meet them.

Level 5

Industry-wide recognised process-nerd. Developing, documenting and open-sourcing best practice as concerns the entire company. Trains facilitators and builds better process throughout their organisation.

  • Knowledge of best practice: Your own team process is recognised in the team and industry. You codify, iterate and share openly. You contribute to a wider debate in a way that elevates the perceived process of the business. You confidently debate the pros and cons of a good process with peers globally.

  • Reflecting on your own process: You break down processes across organisations and look for holes and improvements. Your own process is efficient, and you've documented it in ways that others can bring into their own.
